Zinc oxide:
It is an inorganic compound with the formula ZnO. It usually appears as a white powder, nearly insoluble in water but it is soluble in both strong acids and alkalis.
ZnO is present in the Earth crust as a mineral zincite; however, most ZnO used commercially is produced synthetically. The mineral usually contains a certain amount of manganese and other elements and is of yellow to red color.
Zinc oxide has chemical properties which impede the growth of fungi, mildew and mold.
Application of Zinc Oxide:
Zinc Oxide plays an important role in a wide range of applications.
We can provide the Zinc Oxide for following applications.
Agriculture:
Zinc oxide is recognized as an essential micronutrient to both plants and animals.
In crop farming, zinc oxide is added to fertilizers to compensate for deficiency in zinc or for poor bio-availability resulting from the composition of the soil.
Zinc oxide is used in compound animal feeds and mineral premixes as a source for the essential element zinc.
Chemicals:
Zinc oxide is an essential starting material for the production of other zinc compounds such as:
Zinc phosphate, zinc stearate, zinc chromate, zinc nitrate, zinc sulphate, zinc octoate, zinc naphtenate, zinc chloride, zinc acetate …
It is also used on its own or as part of a more complex catalyst system to drive a wide range of organic chemical reactions. One of the very well known zinc oxide applications is its ability to remove sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulphide from the gases of, for example, hydrocarbon plants.
Grades used depend on the chemical purity required and/or the formulation of the finished product
Glass and Ceramics:
The biggest use of zinc oxide is in glass and ceramics, where the main role is as a fluxing agent in the preparation of frits and enamels for ceramic wall and floor tiles, or of enamels for sanitary and tableware ceramic objects. Zinc oxide is currently used in the fabrication of artistic glass, table and cooking ware, crystalline glass,
Zinc oxide is used to manufacture glazes and acts as an opacifier or whitener. Zinc oxide's low coefficient of thermal expansion improves resistance to thermal and mechanical shock, most notably in glass. In the frit industry, zinc oxide enhances colour and clarity. Zinc oxide's high refractive index makes it an excellent raw material for manufacturing optical glass. Zinc oxide is used in the varistor and ferrite industries to manufacture ceramic components which protect against lightning and voltage surges.
Tires & Rubbers:
Zinc oxide is an essential part of most rubber products, both for its chemical activity during vulcanization and for its effect on the physical properties of the finished rubber product.
Zinc oxide and stearic acid are ingredients in the commercial manufacture of rubber goods. A mixture of these two compounds allows a quicker and more controllable rubber cure. Zinc oxide can also be used as filler in some rubber mixtures.
Zinc oxide is used as a reinforcing agent adding durability and abrasion resistance. Zinc oxide is a raw material which aids in protecting rubber from harmful UV rays
Lubricant & Greases:
Zinc oxide is used both for the production of zinc dithiophosphates and certain specialized lubricants and grease formulations.
The main role of zinc oxide in automotive engine oils is to help in reducing the oxidation, corrosion and wear on the engine.
Zinc oxide is sometimes included in the preparation of greases for high temperature or high pressure applications.
Pigment in Paints:
Zinc white is used as a pigment in paints. It is also used in coatings for paper. It absorbs both UVA and UVB rays of ultraviolet light, zinc oxide can be used in ointments, creams, and lotions to protect against sunburn and other damage to the skin caused by ultraviolet light (see sunscreen). It is the broadest spectrum UVA and UVB absorber that is approved for use as a sunscreen by the FDA, and is completely photostable.
It is also a main ingredient of mineral makeup.
Plastics: Zinc oxide provides excellent UV stability
and resistance in plastics, particularly outdoor weathering
polypropylenes. Zinc oxide can impart heat resistance
properties.
